The address sets the catchment, not the neighbourhood

In Brno, catchment areas (spádový obvod) for primary schools and nurseries are set by the city with one ordinance for all districts (Sections 178 and 179 of the Education Act). Boundaries follow streets and often run down the middle of them: even numbers may belong to a different school than odd ones. What counts is the child's permanent address.

Who has priority

  • For primary school, children with permanent residence in the catchment area have priority, up to the school's capacity.
  • For nursery, children who turn three by the start of the school year and have permanent residence in the area have priority. Pre-school education is compulsory in the year before starting school.
  • The school admits other children according to criteria it publishes before enrolment.

Moving?

  • Catchment follows permanent residence on the date of enrolment. If you are moving, register your child at the new address in good time.
  • In new neighbourhoods and new builds, it is worth checking whether the address already belongs to a school's catchment; new streets are added to the ordinance with a delay.
  • The catchment school need not be the nearest one: the area may cross a main road or a hill. The address page shows how far it is to the catchment school.
