Where to look

Dentists in the most searched districts:

With a contract or without

With a dentist who has a contract with your health insurance company, basic care is covered by insurance; some treatments and materials beyond that basic level cost extra even there, so ask about prices in advance. Without a contract, you pay for everything yourself. Of the 1 173 Prague practices, 909 have a contract with VZP. We also show contracts with ČPZP and VoZP for every practice; for the other insurers (OZP, ZPMV, RBP, Zaměstnanecká pojišťovna Škoda), ask the practice directly.

Registration

Like GPs, dentists are registering doctors (registrující lékař): when one takes you on, you fill in the registration form together. You can change your dentist once every three months; simply register with the new one.

Preventive check-ups

  • Adults: one preventive check-up a year.
  • Children: two check-ups a year.
  • Pregnant women: two check-ups during pregnancy.

Regular check-ups also pay off because they catch small problems before they start to hurt.

When a dentist may turn you down

Under the Health Services Act (zákon o zdravotních službách, No. 372/2011 Coll., Section 48), a dentist may refuse a new patient only if taking you on would exceed their reasonable workload (the practice is full) or if they have no contract with your health insurance company. They must give you the reason in writing.

When no one is taking patients

Free capacity changes, so try calling more practices, including in neighbouring districts. If you still have no luck, contact your health insurance company: it must make care available to its policyholders and will help you find a dentist. For acute pain outside opening hours, the emergency dental service (zubní pohotovost) can help.
