Housing for older people in Brno

In later life, what matters is what's within walking distance: the doctor, the pharmacy, the shop, a park bench and the tram stop. Which Brno neighbourhoods do it best and what to think about when choosing a flat.

Updated 29. 10. 2026 · Městomat editors · the figures in the text are computed live from the data (rents as of 6/2026)

What matters in later life

The ranking gives the most weight to doctors and pharmacies per resident, then shops within 500 metres and green space, and less to the journey to the centre by public transport. So a neighbourhood with a big shopping centre on its edge won't necessarily beat one with several smaller shops between the homes.

Doctors and pharmacies

You choose your GP (praktický lékař) yourself and can change them once every three months. In later life it helps to have the surgery and a pharmacy a few minutes' walk away, not on the other side of town. The ranking shows how many doctors there are per resident in each neighbourhood.

What to think about when choosing a flat

  • A lift and step-free access. A few steps at the entrance can make a flat hard to reach in a few years' time.
  • A stop nearby, without a steep hill. Brno is hilly, and an uphill walk to the stop gets longer with age.
  • Ground floor or a higher floor: the ground floor has no stairs; higher floors tend to have more light and privacy.
  • A pharmacy and a shop on the way, ideally on the flat and with a bench to rest on.
  • Social services: home care, day centres and care homes (domovy pro seniory) are provided by the City of Brno and its districts (městské části); the social affairs department (sociální odbor) of your district can tell you more.
  • Price: a smaller flat is often more practical for one or two people. A typical 1+kk (one room plus a kitchenette) in Brno costs CZK 12 600 and a 2+kk CZK 16 500 a month; details in the guide how much rent costs in Brno.
