Living with a dog in Brno

A dog needs a park or wood close to home, not on the other side of town. Which Brno neighbourhoods do it best and how to agree a tenancy with a pet.

How we calculate it

For life with a dog, the biggest weight goes to the distance to a park or wood from every address in the neighbourhood, followed by the share of green space in the neighbourhood. So a neighbourhood only does well when most homes have green space nearby, not just one large park on the edge.

Closest to green space

Morning and evening walks are a daily routine, so what counts is how far you have to go from home. The neighbourhoods closest to a park or wood are Kohoutovice, Obřany and Lesná. In half of Brno's neighbourhoods it is further than 162 metres from a typical address.

Brno has large green spaces inside the city too: Lužánky, Wilsonův les and Špilberk, and on the outskirts the woods around Brněnská přehrada and Hády. For everyday walks, though, a small green patch round the corner means more than a big park a few stops away.

Sport and exercise within reach

Many dog owners run or cycle with their dog. The ranking shows where there are the most places for sport within walking distance.

Renting with a dog

  • Agree it in advance. The Civil Code (§ 2258) gives tenants the right to keep an animal in the flat, as long as it doesn't cause others in the building disproportionate nuisance. Whether a contract can ban pets outright is not clear-cut; mention the dog at the viewing and have the landlord's consent written into the contract.
  • Deposit (kauce): some landlords ask for a higher deposit because of a pet; even so, it may be at most three months' rent. More on contracts and deposits in the guide tenancy agreement, deposit and notice.
  • Handover report (předávací protokol): photograph the floors, doors and door frames when you move in, so you don't end up arguing over damage the dog didn't cause when you move out.
  • Ground floor or garden: a ground-floor flat, one with a small garden or a building with a lift makes walks easier, especially for an older dog. Houses with gardens tend to be on the outskirts.

Price

A bigger flat or a house with a garden costs more. A typical 2+kk (two rooms plus a kitchenette) in Brno costs CZK 16 500 and a 3+kk CZK 19 500 a month. The cheapest neighbourhood is Komín.

What else to think about

  • Dog fee (poplatek ze psů): register your dog for the fee at your place of permanent residence. The amount and the rules for dogs in public are set by City of Brno by-laws (obecně závazné vyhlášky); check the current wording with the city hall (magistrát) or your district (městská část) office.
  • Microchip: every dog must be microchipped and have a valid rabies vaccination.
  • Vet: find the nearest vet practice and where the emergency service is at night and at weekends.
  • Dogs on public transport: dogs can travel on Brno's public transport and within South Moravian integrated transport (IDS JMK): small dogs in a carrier, bigger ones muzzled and on a lead. Check the conditions and fares with the operator.
  • The exact address: an address check shows how far the park is from the flat you're looking at.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I live with a dog in Brno?

Lesná, Bystrc and Sadová come out best: from most addresses a park or wood is close by, and green space makes up a large part of the neighbourhood.

Can a landlord ban dogs?

The Civil Code (občanský zákoník, § 2258) gives tenants the right to keep an animal in the flat, as long as it doesn't cause the landlord or others in the building disproportionate nuisance given the conditions in the building. Whether a contract can ban pets outright is not clear-cut, so agree it in advance and have it in the contract.

How much is the dog fee in Brno?

The dog fee (poplatek ze psů) and its due date are set by a City of Brno by-law (obecně závazná vyhláška). It is paid according to the dog owner's place of permanent residence; check the current amount and reductions with the city hall (magistrát) or your district office.

Where can dogs run off the lead in Brno?

The rules for dogs off the lead are set by a city by-law (obecně závazná vyhláška). Before you let your dog off the lead, check the current wording on the city's website or with your district office.
