The best neighbourhoods for families with children in Ostrava

A nursery and school nearby, a playground, a park and a shop on foot. Which Ostrava neighbourhoods do best at this, and why it pays to check the catchment of the specific address.

What families need

We build the ranking from data on every address in the neighbourhood. Schools and nurseries and playgrounds within walking distance count the most, then a park or wood nearby, and shops and doctors less. So a neighbourhood only does well when it has everything together, not just one big school.

The catchment school matters more than the neighbourhood

A child gets priority at the catchment school by registered address, not by neighbourhood. Catchment boundaries often run down the middle of a street, so two neighbouring addresses can belong to different schools. Before you sign a contract, check the catchment school and nursery for the flat's address itself.

Ostrava has 83 primary schools and 92 nursery schools. Each one has its programme, ČŠI inspection reports, parents' reviews and a map.

Enrolment

Enrolment for year 1 runs from 15. 1. 2027 to 15. 2. 2027, for nursery schools from 15. 3. 2027 to 15. 4. 2027. The schools announce the exact days on their own website or the city district's.

Green space and air

With small children a park within ten minutes' walk is handy. The closest to a park or wood are Slezská Ostrava, Michálkovice and Petřkovice. In Ostrava it's worth looking at air quality by neighbourhood too: the differences show mainly in winter.

What else to think of

  • The way to school: can the child walk it alone? Are there big junctions or tram tracks on the way?
  • Nursery capacity: in new developments, nurseries are often full for the first years after people move in.
  • Paediatrician: a children's doctor takes new patients only up to capacity; check availability before you need one.
  • Price: what a bigger flat costs is in the guide how much rent costs in Ostrava. A typical 3+kk in Ostrava costs CZK 13 500 a month.
