1. Pick a neighbourhood

3. Check the specific flat
A neighbourhood is an average; the street and the building decide. Before you sign, check the flat’s address: stops and the trip to the centre, shops, doctors, parks, air quality and schools. In Ostrava, look at the ground too: part of the city is undermined by coal mining, so the address report shows whether an address lies on undermined land. Take the flat viewing checklist to the viewing and read the guide lease, deposit and notice before signing.
4. Permanent residence
You register your permanent residence at the office of the city district (městský obvod) you will live in. Bring your ID card and a document showing your right to use the flat, such as the lease, or the owner’s officially verified consent. Your permanent residence decides, among other things, your children’s catchment school and nursery and where you pay the waste fee.
5. Doctor, school and nursery
- Doctor: your registration does not end when you move, but it pays to have a GP, dentist and paediatrician nearby. Practices by district, with the insurers’ contracts, are in the doctors overview.
- School and nursery: the catchment area follows your permanent address and the catchment districts are set by a city decree. Enrolment for year 1 runs from 15. 1. 2027 to 15. 2. 2027, for nurseries from 15. 3. 2027 to 15. 4. 2027. Each school sets its exact days.
6. Public transport and the car
Ostrava has trams, trolleybuses and buses in the ODIS system, with night lines too. From a typical Ostrava address it takes 27 minutes to náměstí Republiky, fastest from Moravská Ostrava. If you travel daily, a long-term pass saves money. The city is spread out and its districts lie far apart, so try your commute before you sign the lease. Tips for living without a car are in the guide car-free living in Ostrava.
