How to find a GP in Brno
After moving to Brno, turning eighteen or when your doctor retires: where to look for a GP, when they may refuse you and what to do if nobody is taking patients. Brno has 232 GP practices.
Where to look
Městomat lists 1 620 medical practices and pharmacies in Brno by specialty and district (městská část), on a map and with their contracts with health insurance companies; 232 of them are GPs. Start with doctors close to home: your GP will also visit you at home when needed.

For children, look for a paediatrician, see Paediatrician in Brno; for teeth, the guide Dentist in Brno.
A contract with your insurer
You get care covered by public health insurance from a doctor who has a contract with your health insurance company. For every practice we show which insurers it has a contract with for that specialty: of Brno's 232 GPs, 214 have a contract with VZP. We also show contracts with ČPZP and VoZP; for the other insurers (OZP, ZPMV, RBP, Zaměstnanecká pojišťovna Škoda), check directly with the practice.
Registration
Call the practice you have chosen and arrange it. When the doctor takes you on, you fill in a registration form (registrační list) together and sign it. From then on they are your registering GP: they do preventive check-ups, write referrals to specialists and keep your records.
When a GP may turn you down
The Health Services Act (No. 372/2011 Coll., Section 48) allows a doctor to refuse a new patient only if:
- taking you on would exceed their reasonable workload (the practice is full),
- you live so far away that they cannot provide home visits,
- they have no contract with your health insurance company.
They must give you the reason in writing.
When no one is taking patients
Your health insurance company must make care available to its policyholders. Call its helpline or write to it saying where you live; it will help you find a doctor who is taking patients. In the meantime, also try neighbouring districts: from the large housing estates the next neighbourhood is often just a few stops away.

After moving and after your 18th birthday
- Registration with a doctor does not end when you move; you can stay with your current one even if you moved to Brno from elsewhere.
- If you change, simply register with the new one; they will request your records from the previous doctor.
- You can change your GP once every three months.
- You can stay with a paediatrician until the age of 19 at the latest; a GP for adults may register patients from the age of 14. Plan the switch in advance.
